Nokia Lumia 830 review, design and battery life

Got an 830 this weekend. For reference, I’ve had a Samsung Focus, and a Lumia 900, 920, and 1020.

**Design**

This is probably the best thing about the 830. It’s slim and feels really solid and well constructed. The only downsides are that there’s a little give in the plastic backing near the camera hump and there’s some light bleed at the bottom edge of the screen.

Otherwise it’s really great, by far the nicest Windows Phone I’ve seen (but I’ve never seen the 925, 930, or HTC One). Very elegant.

**Performance**

I was worried about this, but it’s generally fine, as long as you aren’t expecting too much. It’s slightly faster at most things than the 920 and 1020, and when it’s not, it’s the same speed. If you’re looking for a significant upgrade to those phones, though, then the 830 isn’t for you.

**Screen**

Somehow, it’s much nicer than the 920, even though spec-wise they’re the same. Even on low/auto, it’s much brighter, whites are whiter, and it seems crisper, even though that’s probably impossible since it’s a bigger screen at the same resolution. I don’t have the 1020 with me right now, so i can’t say, but it seems better than that too.

**Camera**

Pretty good. It’s noticeably sharper than the 920 (no point comparing it to the 1020) and it performs much faster. The 5″ screen also makes a better viewfinder.

Low-light performance is okay. There is a lot of noise in low-light shots, and I think that there might be more than the 920. I’m no expert photographer, but it seems like for quick “pull out of your pocket” shots in low light, the 920 is better quality.

On the other hand, the shots in bright light are significantly sharper and just better balanced to my eye. As I said, I’m not an expert photographer, so I don’t know.

Overall, I would say it’s a good upgrade for people coming from a 520, 620, 720, or WP7 phone. I don’t think I’d recommend it as a phone you’re going to keep for 2 years if you’re coming from a 920 or something like that.

Nokia Lumia 1020 vs Lumia 830: which one is better?

Depends. 830 is a newer generation device, so its got newer gen specs that support stuff like SensorCore (think fitbit), will support voice-activated cortana when that comes out, etc. Because its a quad core you’ll likely not run into “Resuming…” screens to much and you performance when taking pictures should be snappier. The Battery life […]

Nokia Lumia renamed to Microsoft Lumia

To be fair and based on facts, Microsoft remains as one of the world’s valuable brands only behind Apple; and #4 in market value only behind Google, Apple and IBM. Sure Microsoft can never be a Nokia brand because at the end of the day, they are two different brands. It’s not about "killing" the […]

Why I hate coding Metro applications even though I love Windows 8

The apps load in full screen. The simple fact (for me at least) is that for most of those apps, I either plan to use them for 30 seconds and then close them again, or I want to leave them open to quickly check, but don’t like them taking up a full screen. This is […]
