For the elderly people, somebody needs to set it up properly with the elderly in mind, not themselves. Also explain how they can download apps, and pin/unpin so they can truly customize it. My mom did and it now works like she wants instead of how i think i want it for her. Most elderly aren’t stupid, they just know very little about these things. Spend a few weekends with them and explain bits from the phone. Ask questions, make her question things etc. And don’t limit them to the basic features a feature-phone can give. Also try to find apps she might like and things she might want to know.
Both my parents now have Windows Phone and they love it. My dad has it entirely different than my mom but she does things her way. Since her previous phone was an Android 2.x device, it wasn’t hard to persuade her, but setting it up and explaining her why i did things, is very important too. They weren’t raised with this stuff, so they need to know in their own ways how this works, why this works and what for it works. Now my mom is active on Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp and uses apps for cooking, health, sugar-level news and weather. Its amazing to see how well she got to know the platform. They now also use my (old) Surface tablet which replaced their Android device too.
You might not realize it, but giving them such a phone and setting it up is a new way for them to spend time with you. Time they gladly spend if you start with a positive attitude and lots of patience.
